(East Distance:We do it Longer, Harder, and Faster)。

Cherry Hill East boots valedictorian

CHERRY HILL
For four years, Steven Gao says, he was the top student in his class at Cherry Hill High School East -- a performance that earned him the valedictorian's role at this year's graduation ceremony.

But on Friday, says Gao, school officials told him he could not speak at the upcoming ceremony.

The 18-year-old Eagle Scout said he has been banned from the podium at Monday's event over his role in placing an off-color advertisement in East's 2005-06 yearbook. The ad included a double entendre of a sexual nature.

"It's totally ruining my whole graduation experience," said Gao, who noted his mother "has been crying a lot lately."

Interim Superintendent Timothy Brennan would not discuss Gao's case.

"I don't want to comment on a student matter," he said.

But Gao and his family were eager to speak.

"He's worked so hard," said the student's mother, Chaohua "Sue" Gao. "And I worked so hard just to help him."

The mother wept as she told how she planned to videotape her son's speech, so his accomplishment could be seen by family members living in China.

"This is unfair," she said.

Steven Gao said he placed the ad several months ago with five other members of East's cross country team. He acknowledged the ad contained "crude humor."

"On Wednesday night, I got a call from the yearbook adviser, asking how the ad got in," said Gao. That led to a meeting on Thursday with the school's athletic director, where Gao said he took responsibility for the ad.

On Friday morning, Gao said, he and his parents met with the school's principal, John O'Breza, and an assistant principal, Len Terranova.

"Basically they indicated they had already made a decision, and I would not be allowed to speak," he said.

O'Breza could not be reached. Terranova declined to comment.

School board president John Galie could not be reached for comment.

Gao, who plans to attend the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, noted he will be allowed to attend graduation.

"I can sit on the stage. I'm still up there as a ranking scholar," he said.

Gao said the language in the controversial ad appears commonly on T-shirts worn by cross country runners.

The ad read in part: "Cross country takes balls . . . Other sports just play with them" and "East distance: We do it longer, harder, faster."

A Web site maintained by East's long-distance runners carries a message of support for Gao.

"Save Steve," it reads, calling Gao "one of the most respected students at the entire school."
