UPON THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF REPEAL OF CHINESE EXCLUSION
Chinese American Citizens Alliance presents this enclosed Resolution of Remembrance on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The Repeal by Congress was passed on December 17, 1943, and signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt when China was America’s ally during World War II.
The Alliance considers this great moment as a major turning point in America for Chinese toward a better condition and to the rights and opportunities otherwise available to any citizen or resident.
During the shameful 60-year period of Exclusion (1882-1943), most Chinese were denied these basic American benefits through numerous laws and directives justified by the existence of the national 1882 Exclusion Act and its subsequent renewals. The 1882 Act effectively shut off Chinese immigration immediately and marked the first time that the United States passed a federal law against part of their peoples based solely on race. The prompt result was the breakup of Chinese families forced to tragically remain divided by geography for a number of generations.
The Alliance, together with other allied groups, continues today to strive to attain equal civil rights for all Americans. Equality in civil rights remains a goal still not perfectly achieved, although there have been many improvements for the lives of Chinese Americans and other ethnic groups added in the later
Exclusion Acts. The Alliance continues to be a firm advocate for family reunification and for better policies for fair and humane immigration laws.
Munson Kwok, national Alliance president, invites all to “Join us in a moment of observance, in recognition of progress made and the advancements to come, and in appreciating the importance of diversity to America.” Across the nation, chapters, the Lodges of Chinese American Citizens Alliance, will be inviting their local communities to join in the observance of the Repeal anniversary. #
