|August "Jazz Month Houston" turned out to be a fabulous month for the Carol Sanders "Monday Nite Jazz Jam" and this music genre'. We had a month long celebration of the finest that Jazz has to offer. |
The month kicked-off with special show host, Sylvester "Stank" LeBlanc. "Stank" hosted the "Monday Nite Jazz Jam" during the 1980s and is an astute professor of music.
Also the month started with an introduction to a new musical genre, "Chinese Improvisation" (Jazz) as presented by Mr. Dazhen Wu from Beijing, China. Mr. Wu collaborated with our own pianist "The Professor" Robert Sanders to assist him in developing this new music art form.
Monday, August 10th we presented the opening ceremony for the 91st Birthday tribute to one of the original "Texas Tenors" Arnett Cobb. In conjunction with the Houston Public Library and the Metropolitan Research Center an exhibit opened "Go Arnett Go" "Blow Red Blow" at the downtown branch.
.............And then came the thunder!!!
Legendary drummer Marion Booker, who performed with Jimi Hendricks returned with all of the antics of the most exciting drum solos ever seen!!!
We continued August Jazz Month activities last week with vocalist Anne LeSear as she sang the music of "The Phenomenal Women of Jazz", "Gotta Have that Swing, Swank and Swag". Billie, Ella, Sarah, Peggy, Dinah and more were all there with theatrical highlights as we introduced to you JazzTheatre.
August was truly a great Month for
Jazz at Smitty's!!!
....................And for some truely rare film footage this week we look at a film short of the legendary Jazz clarinetist Sidney Bechet. This piece was shot in Germany, 1930 and does not have subtitles, but it gives us an opportunity to see and hear some of what Bechet was doing in the late 1920s and early 30s.
