|HOUSTON, TX – For her heroic efforts, a Harris County Sheriff’s Detention Officer (DO) will be honored on Wednesday as “Hero of the Year” by the Westchase Rotary Club.|
The award will be presented to Detention Officer Julia Harris during a special awards breakfast.
On September 28, 2009, Detention Officer Harris responded to an inmate disturbance call in one of the female cell blocks. When she and two of her supervisors asked the inmates to return to their respective cells, one of them became combative. When DO Harris tried to restrain the inmate, the inmate attacked Sergeant Lois Causey. During the altercation, Sgt. Causey was pinned on the floor by the inmate and choked. DO Harris courageously placed herself in harm’s way despite being injured and continued to defend Sgt. Causey until the inmate was subdued and handcuffed. Her actions kept the inmate from causing Sgt. Causey serious bodily injury.
“I was just doing my job,” said DO Harris when asked for her thoughts about the Rotary’s recognition. “I’m honored and humbled because we all work together and I don’t think I’m the only so-called hero,” she added.
The Houston Westchase Rotary Club formed in April 1983. Its members, called Rotarians, are business and professional leaders whose mission is service to others. “We would like to be able to do more for the community ourselves,” says Westchase Rotary Club member Gene Stoffel. “And since we can’t, we feel it’s important to recognize those that do.”
The club has been an active supporter of many charitable activities including college scholarships, literacy projects and the eradication of polio worldwide.
