Houston Arboretum & Nature Center Calendar of Events February 2009

HOUSTON—The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, a lush 155-acre nature preserve, is one of the city’s greatest natural treasures. Located in Memorial Park, at 4501 Woodway Drive, the Arboretum is home to more than 75 varieties of native trees, 160 species of birds, 16 species of turtles, 10 species of frogs and 33 kinds of butterflies. Visitors can explore and enjoy five miles of walking trails to experience nature at its most dramatic and in exquisite detail. The Arboretum grounds are open to the public daily, except major holidays, from dawn to dusk.

The Nature Center building is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Discovery Room is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and provides fun, hands-on activities and exhibits to explore nature up close. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

A bustling schedule of year round activities and courses are available for adults, children and families to create a sense of wonder and appreciation for nature. For more information, call 713-681-8433 or visit www.houstonarboretum.org.

"Go Green" Spring Break Camp– March 16 - 22, 2009

Go Green this spring at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center's Spring Break Camp. From roots to shoots, children at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center's Spring Break Camp will dig deep into understanding plants and how they live, grow and eat. Kids can look forward to growing their very own plants, designing gardens, creating an edible display, dyeing a bandana with plant pigments and much more. Campers are guaranteed to take home plants and other unique projects.

The Arboretum has a long history of providing quality nature camp programs that use this 155-acre nature sanctuary as a living laboratory to explore nature and science. This week-long camp will include both indoor and outdoor adventures. Children are taught by staff naturalists in classes by age (5 & 6, 7 & 8, 9-12).

Tai Chi

The Arboretum provides a serene, natural backdrop for this graceful, meditative form of exercise. Class is held inside Arboretum classroom overlooking the forest. Cost is $10 per session when registering for month or $15 per session.

Yoga on the way Home

Why fight the traffic? Slow down and relax in the peaceful beauty of the Arboretum during a one-hour yoga session in the Arboretum's classroom overlooking the forest. Cost is $40 for one month’s classes or $15 per session.

Spring Volunteer Orientation

Get out and get back to nature by volunteering at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. Learn about the Arboretum's history, mission and programs, take a tour of the building and grounds and find out more about the opportunities available to get involved at this 155-acre non-profit nature sanctuary. Art and Nature After School Program
Grades 1-5

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center in partnership with City ArtWorks is offering a new Art and Nature After School program for children in grades 1 – 5. All art projects will be inspired by nature as students experiment with a variety of art materials and techniques each week:

Feb. 11 – Bizarre Bugs – Students will learn about bug body parts as they design their own bug

Feb. 18 – Buzzing Around – Students will look at flowers from a bee’s perspective, and then create a painting inspired by the art of Georgia O’Keefe, focusing on the radial balance in nature.

Feb. 25 – Cold-blooded Creatures – After a discussion about various reptiles in the Arboretum, students will create a sculpture of a reptile.

March 4 – Art in Nature – Students will create a “nature print” by using leaves as a stamp.

Instructor: Saida Fagala has been teaching and exhibiting her work for over 25 years. Her work is in public collections at Museum of Oriental People's Art in Moscow, Ministry of Culture in Azerbaijan.

Cost: $20 per class or $70 for all four classes.

Friday, Feb. 13
1:30 – 3 p.m.
Home School Class: Predators
Ages 5 to 12

Designed especially for homeschoolers, this class will explore some of the unique traits that help animals hunt for their food. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Pre-registration required by Wednesday prior to class.

Friday, Feb. 13
6:30– 8:30 p.m.
Valentine's Wine & Cheese Night Hike
Ages 21 and up

Enjoy a moonlit walk in the woods to a deck overlooking the Arboretum meadow and pond to sample a variety of locally-prepared cheeses and wines. During the guided walk, listen for owls, flying squirrels and other sounds of the night forest. Ages 21 and over only. Cost is $22 for members, $32 for non-members. Space is limited; pre-registration required.

Tadpole Troopers: Amazing Armadillos
Ages 3 to 5 with adult

The spring series of Tadpole Troopers classes will explore the mammals of the Arboretum. In February, children will learn amazing facts about armadillos. Cost is $13 for members; $26 for non-members. Pre-registration required by Wednesday prior to class.

Naturalist Explorers: Need for Speed!
Ages 5 to 8

Speed is a necessity for survival for some species. Learn about the fastest animals in the world and test to see how your speed compares. Cost is $15 for members; $30 for non-members. Pre-registration required by Wednesday prior to class.

9 – 11 a.m.
EcoTrackers: Built for Speed
Ages 9 to 12

Canoe Trip on Buffalo Bayou

Enjoy a half-day trip down Buffalo Bayou and learn about the history of Houston's most unique natural asset. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, and includes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The focus of the trip is education and conservation and will include discussion of important conservation issues currently facing our Bayou. Trip leader will be guide Don Greene, an award-winning conservationist and educator. Trip starts at 1 p.m. and will conclude between 5 and 7 p.m. A mandatory orientation at the Arboretum is held on Thursday evening prior to the trip. Cost (includes all equipment): $85 for members; $105 for non-members.

Thursday, Feb. 26: 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Eco-friendly Wines
Ages 21 and up

Join the Houston Arboretum and Whole Foods Market to explore the savory flavors of sustainable, eco-friendly wines and answer your questions on wine pairings. Enjoy a decadent wine tasting including an assortment of delectable cheeses and rich chocolates, along with some great tips on how to get the best value on flavorful eco-friendly, sustainable wine. Don't miss out on this deliciously informative class. Registration is limited! Ages 21 and over only. Cost is $ 25 per person for members; $35 for non-members.

Saturday, Feb. 28
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Nature 101: Grassland Ecology

Almost one-fourth of the Earth's land is grassland. Learn about the plants and animals that exist in this disappearing ecosystem. Nature 101 classes are introductory natural history courses designed to introduce participants to the animals and plants found at the Nature Center. It's also an opportunity for teachers to earn 2 hrs of SBEC credit and for Texas Master Naturalists to earn Advanced Training.

Cost is $25 Pre-registration required by Wednesday prior to class.

Saturday, Feb. 28
1 - 3 p.m.
Nature 101: Forest Ecology

Most of the Arboretum is a forest. Discover how the wildlife and plants interact as an ecological system.
