Houston Arboretum & Nature Center Calendar of Events March 2009

HOUSTON—The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, a lush 155-acre nature preserve, is one of the city’s greatest natural treasures. Located in Memorial Park, at 4501 Woodway Drive, the Arboretum is home to more than 75 varieties of native trees, 160 species of birds, 16 species of turtles, 10 species of frogs and 33 kinds of butterflies. Visitors can explore and enjoy five miles of walking trails to experience nature at its most dramatic and in exquisite detail. The Arboretum grounds are open to the public daily, except major holidays, from dawn to dusk.

The Nature Center building is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Discovery Room is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and provides fun, hands-on activities and exhibits to explore nature up close. Admission is free, but donations to support this nonprofit organization are appreciated.

A bustling schedule of year round activities and courses are available for adults, children and families to create a sense of wonder and appreciation for nature. For more information, call 713-681-8433 or visit www.houstonarboretum.org.

Spring Native Plant Sale

Saturday, March 14 – Sunday, March 22

9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily, Members Only Sale, March 14: 9 a.m. to noon, Sale opens to public at noon

March is the perfect time of year to add native plants to your Houston yard. The Houston Arboretum’s plant sale will feature hard-to-find native plants including grasses, vines, trees and shrubs. Organic-based Nature’s Way products, including screened compost and native mulch, will be available for sale. Proceeds support the Arboretum’s education and conservation programs.

Nature Photography Contest
March 1 – April 15

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center announces its second annual juried Nature Photography Contest. The youth category is open to all Houston-area youths, ages 18 and younger. Entry fees for the youth category are $5 per photo. The member category is open to any Arboretum member, and includes a $10 per photo entry fee. Photos must be taken at the Arboretum between March 1 and April 15. Photos can be color or black and white, any size, but must be mounted on an 11 by 14-inch mat and submitted by April 15. Winners will be announced April 30. First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive $300, $200 and $100, respectively. For contest details visit www.houstonarboretum.org.

Tai Chi

The Arboretum provides a serene, natural backdrop for this graceful and meditative form of exercise. Class is held inside an Arboretum classroom overlooking the forest. Cost is $10 per session when registering for a month or $15 per session.

Yoga on the way Home
Thursdays, March 5, 12 and 26
5:45 - 6:45 p.m.
Why fight the traffic? Slow down and relax in the peaceful beauty of the Arboretum during a one-hour yoga session in the Arboretum's classroom overlooking the forest. Cost is $10 per session when registering for a month or $15 per session.

Art and Nature After-School Program

Wednesday, March 4
4 - 5:30 p.m.
Grades 1-5

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, in partnership with City ArtWorks, is offering a new Art and Nature After-School Program for children in grades 1 – 5. All art projects will be inspired by nature as students experiment with a variety of materials and techniques each week:

On March 4, students will create a “nature print” by using leaves as stamps. Instructor Saida Fagala has been teaching and exhibiting her work for more than 25 years. Her work can be seen at the Museum of Oriental People’s Art in Moscow and the Ministry of Culture in Azerbaijan. Cost: $20 per child

Friday, March 6
10:30 to 11:45 a.m.
Tadpole Troopers: “O” is for Opossum
Ages 3 to 5 with adult

The spring series of Tadpole Troopers classes will explore the mammals of the Arboretum. March’s class will study the only American marsupial, the opossum. Cost is $13 for members; $26 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

Home School Class: City Critters
Friday, March 6
1:30 - 3 p.m.
Ages 5 to 12

Designed especially for home schoolers, this class will focus on some of the animals that live in urban neighborhoods: raccoons, opossums and skunks. Cost is $15 for members; $20 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

Naturalist Explorers: Extreme Makeovers

Many animals change in appearance as they grow. Students will learn about the extreme makeovers that some animals go through and how this helps them survive. Cost is $15 for members; $30 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

EcoTrackers: Metamorphosis—Change of Plans
Ages 9 to 12
Saturday, March 7
9 - 11 a.m.

Explore why certain animals undergo metamorphosis and how this change helps them survive. Cost is $15 for members; $30 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

Landscaping for Birds and Butterflies
Wednesdays, March 11 and 25
7 - 9 p.m.

Learn the principles necessary to create an oasis for birds and butterflies. Course topics will include plant selection, plant diversity and placement in the landscape, water features and the process for obtaining certification as a Wildlife Habitat. Instructor Glenn Olsen is a past president of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

Cost is $40 for members or $60 for non-members.

Nature 101: Birds
Saturday, March 14

10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Learn about the unique characteristics that allow birds to take flight. See some local, fine-feathered friends on a guided walk at the Arboretum. Nature 101 classes are introductory natural history courses designed to introduce participants to the animals and plants found at the Nature Center. It’s also an opportunity for teachers to earn two hours of SBEC credit and for Texas Master Naturalists to earn Advanced Training. Cost is $25. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

Nature 101: Interpretation
Saturday, March 14

1 - 3 p.m.
In today’s increasingly urbanized world, many children and adults experience a disconnect from nature and the outdoors. Learn some basic techniques on how to better interpret nature to the public, your children, your grandchildren and even your peers. Teachers can earn two hours of SBEC credit and Texas Master Naturalists can earn Advanced Training. Cost is $25. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

Spring Break Camp: Go Green
Monday – Friday, March 16-20
9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Go Green this spring at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center’s Spring Break Camp. From roots to shoots, children in the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center’s Spring Break Camp will dig deep into understanding how plants live, grow and eat. Children can look forward to growing their very own plants, designing gardens, creating an edible display, dyeing a bandana with plant pigments and much more. Campers are guaranteed to take home plants and other unique projects.

The Arboretum has a long history of providing quality nature camp programs that use this 155-acre nature sanctuary as a living laboratory to explore nature and science. This week-long camp features both indoor and outdoor adventures.

Children are taught by staff naturalists in classes by age (5-6, 7-8 and 9-12). Priority registration is given to Arboretum members by membership level.

Cost: Full day camp (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.): $230 members; $270 non-members

Morning only camp (9 a.m. – noon): $120 members; $150 non-members

Family discount: $10 off registration for additional child in same family.

Nature Photography Critique with Kathy Adams Clark

Tuesday, March 17
6:30 - 9 p.m.

Learn to improve your nature photography skills from an expert. Kathy Adams Clark has been a full-time nature photographer since 1995. Participants have the opportunity to receive feedback and suggestions on their own photos from Clark. Cost is $35 for members; $50 for non-members.

How to Build Rain Gardens and Nature Ponds
Wednesday, March 18: 7 - 9 p.m.
& Saturday, March 21: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Rain gardens and small nature ponds are water features that not only attract wildlife, including birds—they are also beneficial to people. From cracked earth and wilted landscapes to floodwaters and back again, learn how to add resilient seasonal color to your yard and help reduce or eliminate potential damage from Houston's next flood event. The class includes a hands-on project on Saturday, March 21. Materials and guidebook are included in the cost of registration. Cost is $60 for members; $75 for non-members.

Canoe Trip on Buffalo Bayou
Saturday, March 21
1 p.m.

Enjoy a half-day trip down Buffalo Bayou and learn about the history of Houston's most unique natural asset. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, and includes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The focus of the trip is education and conservation, and will include a discussion of important conservation issues currently facing the Bayou. The trip leader will be Don Greene, an award-winning conservationist and educator. The trip starts at 1 p.m. and will conclude between 5 and 7 p.m. A mandatory orientation at the Arboretum is held on Thursday evening prior to the trip. Cost (includes all equipment): $85 for members; $105 for non-members.

Creating Leaf Art
Thursday, March 26

7 - 9 p.m.
Learn to create beautiful artwork using leaves, seed pods, flowers and other natural materials. Instructor Owen Mortenson is the owner of Leaf Botanical Art and was named one of American Style magazine’s “Ten Emerging Artists.” His work was featured on the TV show “Extreme Makeover, Home Edition” in his hometown of Logan, Utah.
