Mr. Stephen Wong, Regional Director of the Americas for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will be highlighting Hong Kong as the platform to launch your success. Mr. Mitchell Lukin, Partner at Baker Botts, will be discussing intellectual property law in Hong Kong and China, and Mr. Gerald Siedl, Senior Vice President of Headworks Inc., will be sharing his personal success story.
Opportunities and challenges abound in post-WTO China. Many are aware that China is not a market to approach unprepared – its size and complexity require a heightened level of commitment and a focused business entry strategy, especially for small and mid-sized companies. Hong Kong’s key advantages are its experience with the China market, prime location and world-class infrastructure. Together with a landmark free-trade pact with China, these advantages reinforce Hong Kong’s role as the premier gateway for U.S. companies to develop new business in China.
Houston and Hong Kong continue to share extensive business and cultural connections. Houston ranks as Hong Kong’s 17th largest U.S. customs trading district and total trade between Houston and Hong Kong totaled $148.2 million in 2008. Trade of industrial machinery and computers between Houston and Hong Kong more than doubled, from $15.2 million in 2007 to $36.6 million in 2008.
