|The 17th Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association Gala will honor the services of Asian/Pacific Americans who made great strides and contributions to the world. |
This year, we are honored to have as the recipient of our George H.W. Bush Heritage award, Former U.S Ambassador to the UN Mr. Sichan Siv. Mr. Siv was appointed by former President George W. Bush to the post of U.S Ambassador to the UN in 2001 until 2006. He is also the author of "GOLDEN BONES: An Extraordinary Journey from Hell in Cambodia to a New Life in America" (Harper), which recounts the journey from humble beginnings in the landmine-riddled villages of Cambodia, to the White House, and the United Nations.
Also, receiving the APA Business award on behalf of Cole Chemical & Distributing, Inc. will be Ms. Donna Fujimoto Cole, Founder and President. Cole Chemical is an organization that has supported Asian-American arts and Houston community in the past 28 years.
Finally, Ms. Kim Szeto, Executive Director of AAFS, will accept the APA Community award on behalf of Asian American Family Services. AAFS is dedicated to serving the mental health needs of the Asian American community in the greater Houston area by providing bilingual and bicultural counseling and support services.
The theme for the 2009 gala is “From Asia With Love 007” The glamorous evening will be held on Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Marriott Westchase Hotel in Houston at 7 pm. Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite 007 characters. Besides the award ceremony, evening will also offer wide range of Mystery Boxes (Silent Auctions) to purchase the valuable items including international round trip tickets donated by Continental Airlines. In addition, guests will have the opportunity to play casino and dance on the Bond night.
In 1990, President George H.W. Bush designated May to be the National Asian/ Pacific American month to celebrate the contributions of the Asian/ Pacific Americans in the US. The mission of APAHA is to promote the Asian/Pacific American culture, heritage and awareness through celebration events and educational outreach – leading to the month of May. The gala is one of many ways that APAHA raises funds to continue ongoing efforts to educate and raise awareness of Houston’s Asian/Pacific American community culture and heritage.
