LIGHTS OUT HOUSTON 2009

BY Alex Wang [ April 24, 2009 at 08:57:36 ]

Houston – Help us wrap-up Earth Week by turning off the lights on April 24, 2009!

For the second year in a row, the Greater Houston Partnership is teaming up with the City of Houston and other top commercial property owners for Lights Out Houston. At a time when companies are looking for ways to save money, conservation may be the simplest solution yet.

Lights Out Houston is a commitment to energy efficiency and includes wide participation by Houston area building owners and their tenants. The goal is to establish a sustained reduction in the use of non-essential electricity in commercial buildings by turning off the lights. Participating property owners and tenants will sign a pledge of their commitment to energy conservation.

Security lighting, any obstruction lighting, emergency lighting and lights in occupied offices will remain lit.

Lights Out Houston started in 2008 as a city-wide undertaking to transform the "Energy Capital of the World" into the "Energy Conservation Capital".

Last year, commercial building participation totaled nearly 105 million square feet, representing more than $67,580 in savings on their electric bill for that weekend alone! If participating owners and tenants put this practice into action year-round it could mean a potential savings of $8 million in electric bills.

Who: Greater Houston Partnership, in collaboration with, the City of Houston and other top commercial property owners

When: Friday, April 24, 2009 starting at 10 pm

Where: The greater Houston area

What: All Class A, B and C office buildings and all government-owned buildings
(excludes hotels, streetlights, etc).

Why: 1) To raise awareness among office building operators and tenants to go LIGHTS OUT when the office is not occupied.

2) To develop operating procedures, by the property owners and tenants, that change today's lighting habits. This includes working with janitorial service companies and building security to turn off lights when personnel are not present.

3) To establish a sustained reduction in the use of non-essential electricity in commercial buildings.

4) To change Houstonians' habits at home by also remembering to turn off lights.
