|“Judge Sotomayor is an exceedingly capable, extraordinarily competent and exceptionally qualified choice to replace Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court and I wholeheartedly support President Obama’s decision. The President’s selection of this capable, competent, and qualified nominee represents a historic moment and quantum leap forward for our country,” said Rep. Al Green (TX-09). |
“Judge Sonia Sotomayor has already demonstrated that she is exceedingly capable through a career that spans thirty years as a prosecutor, litigator, trial court and appellate judge. In addition, she brings an extraordinary level of competency to the Supreme Court with more federal judicial experience than any justice in 100 years, and more overall judicial experience than anyone confirmed for the Court in the past 70 years. Her qualifications are exceptional having participated in over 3000 panel decisions and authored roughly 400 published opinions as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. However, there is one additional reason of paramount importance as to why she is a good choice. She has enjoyed bipartisan support in the past having been promoted to the Second Circuit Court by Democratic President Bill Clinton after having been appointed to the District Court for the Southern District of New York by Republican President George H.W. Bush,” stated Rep. Al Green.
Article Two of the United States Constitution gives the President the authority to nominate Justices, who are then confirmed "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.” “Judge Sonia Sotomayor would represent the first Hispanic and third woman to sit on the bench in the 220 year history of the Supreme Court, and she will achieve this supreme honor because she is capable, competent and qualified,” stated Rep. Al Green.
