Houston Arboretum & Nature Center Calendar of Events July 2009

HOUSTON—The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, a lush 155-acre nature preserve, is one of the city’s greatest natural treasures. Located in Memorial Park, at 4501 Woodway Drive, the Arboretum is home to more than 75 varieties of native trees, 160 species of birds, 16 species of turtles, 10 species of frogs and 33 kinds of butterflies. Visitors can explore and enjoy five miles of walking trails to experience nature at its most dramatic and in exquisite detail. The Arboretum grounds are open to the public daily, except major holidays, from dawn to dusk.

The Nature Center building is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Discovery Room is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and provides fun, hands-on activities and exhibits to explore nature up close. Admission is free, but donations to support this nonprofit organization are appreciated.

explore the wild beauty of Big Bend National Park

Tuesday – Saturday, August 11-15
Registration deadline is July 15.

Join Arboretum naturalists and explore the beauty of Big Bend National Park in early August. Using the Chisos Mountains Lodge as a base, this trip will provide the opportunity to experience Big Bend’s three major ecological features: the Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos Mountains and the Rio Grande River. The trip will include birding walks and talks by naturalists at Big Bend. Trip leaders include Bill Eley, Program Development Director at the Arboretum with more than 30 years of experience birding, and Glenn Olsen, naturalist, nature tour leader, and past president of the Native Plant Society of Texas. Cost is $1,195 for Arboretum members; $1,295 for non-members (double occupancy). Fees include ground transportation from Midland, all meals, lodging, park entrance fees and gratuities. The trip is limited to 12 participants and a $500 deposit is required by July 15 to reserve a spot. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center Nature Trekkers Summer Camps for kids 5 to 12

What a deal. Kids don’t have to leave Houston to enjoy nature and the outdoors at camp this summer. Parents save some money and the kids have a great time.

Knot tying, orienteering, bug collecting (and releasing!) and natural arts and crafts are just a few of the activities kids will experience during the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center’s Nature Trekkers Summer Camps. Week-long classes offer hands-on learning experiences for children ages 5 to 12 under the guidance of staff naturalists, and include both indoor and outdoor activities at the 155-acre nature sanctuary. Camps topics include: “Winged Hunters,” July 13-17; “Lifelines,” July 20-24; “Outdoor Adventures,” June 22-26 and July 27-31; “Bug Basics,” June 29-July 3 or August 3-7; and “Wild Science,” July 6-10 or August 10-14. Cost for full-day camp is $230 for members; $270 for non-members; limited morning-only options are also available.

Now available! After-camp activities provide enriching activities for children from 3 to 5 p.m. Classes include Creative Movement Camp, offered for one-week sessions starting June 15, June 29, July 14, July 27 and August 10, and Art Camp classes, taught by City ArtWorks the weeks of June 8, June 22, July 6, July 20 and August 3. Cost is $100 per child per week.

Yoga on the way Home
Why fight the traffic? Slow down and relax in the peaceful beauty of the Arboretum during a one-hour yoga session in the Arboretum's classroom overlooking the forest. Cost is $10 per session when registering for a month or $15 per session.

Nature Trekkers Summer Camp: Wild Science
Ages 5 to 12

Campers will become junior wildlife biologists for the week by making some tools of the trade, developing their wildlife tracking skills and learning how wildlife biologists manage wild creatures and the habitats they live in.

Cost is $230 for members, $270 for non-members. Morning only (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) camp option is also available.

3 – 5 p.m.

Summer Art Camp: Reptile-O-Rama
Ages 5 to 12

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center in partnership with City ArtWorks is offering Summer Art Camp classes for ages 5 to 12. Children will explore the world of reptiles while making two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art from a variety of art materials. Instructor: Saida Fagala of City ArtWorks

Cost is $100 per child for week.

Monday-Friday, July 13-17
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Nature Trekkers Summer Camp: Winged Hunters
Ages 5 to 12

Kids will learn how to identify predatory birds such as owls and hawks by their calls and shapes and even get to see some of these spectacular birds live and up close!

Cost for all day is $230 for members, $270 for non-members. Morning only (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) camp option is also available..

After Camp Class: Creative Movement Camp
Ages 5 to 12

Creative Movement Camp focuses on locomotor skills with the use of music and games. Children will enjoy dance, yoga, rhythm instruments, tumbling and gardening. Instructors will guide children through non-competitive activities that will stimulate their minds and bodies, and will give participants the freedom to imagine and create their own movement material. Cost is $100 per child for week.

10 – 11 a.m.
Tai Chi

The Arboretum provides a serene, natural backdrop for this graceful and meditative form of exercise. Class is held inside an Arboretum classroom overlooking the forest. Cost is $15 per session.

Saturday, July 18
1 p.m.
Canoe Trip on Buffalo Bayou

Enjoy a half-day trip down Buffalo Bayou and learn about the history of Houston's most unique natural asset. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, and includes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The focus of the trip is education and conservation, and will include a discussion of important conservation issues currently facing the Bayou. The trip leader will be Don Greene, an award-winning conservationist and educator. The trip starts at 1 p.m. and will conclude between 5 and 7 p.m. A mandatory orientation at the Arboretum is held on Thursday evening prior to the trip. Cost (includes all equipment): $85 for members; $105 for non-members.

Nature Trekkers Summer Camp: Lifelines
Ages 5 to 12

Discover the designs and artistic beauty of nature. Kids will create crafts and hands-on art projects and play interactive games to appreciate the art and intricate patterns that are found in nature. Young naturalists will discover their inner artists. Cost for all day is $230 for members, $270 for non-members. Morning only (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) camp option is also available.

3 – 5 p.m.

Summer Art Camp: Nature’s Architecture

Ages 5 to 12

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center in partnership with City ArtWorks is offering Summer Art Camp classes for ages 5 to 12. Children will look at everything from bird’s nests to spider webs and flowers to study radial balance, symmetry and other designs in nature. Instructor: Saida Fagala of City ArtWorks

Cost is $100 per child for week..

Nature Trekkers Summer Camp: Outdoor Adventures
Ages 5 to 12

Fun and challenging outdoor skills like orienteering, knot tying and camp crafts will be the focus of this week’s camp. Kids will learn how to “leave no trace behind” when camping or exploring in nature.

Cost is $230 for members, $270 for non-members. Morning only (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) camp option is also available.

3 – 5 p.m.

After Camp Class: Creative Movement Camp
Ages 5 to 12
