Farouk Shami, Founder and Chairman of Farouk Systems, Inc.
Farouk Shami is a self-made businessman who came to America 44 years ago with $71 in his pocket and achieved the American dream. He is the Founder and Chairman of Farouk Systems, Inc. and the inventor of the world renowned brands BioSilk and CHI currently sold in 106 countries. He is an entrepreneur, educator, employer, manufacturer, and problem solver that employs more than 2,500 people worldwide.
Farouk came to the United States on a scholarship to the University of Arkansas. His intentions were to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career in Education. Instead, he followed his pas¬sion and became a hairdresser and it was not long before he became a salon owner. Unfortunately, with every victory there are challenges. Farouk discovered that he developed a deadly allergy to ammonia, a chemical found in hair dye. However, he was dedicated and refused to give up, so he researched different ingredients until he came up with a solution. In 1986, there was a major break¬through when he invented the first Ammonia-Free hair lightener and coloring system. From that mo¬ment, Farouk’s mission became Environment, Education and Ethics.
In 1992, Farouk invented the use of silk molecules in hair products and developed the Award win¬ning BioSilk line. In 2001, he pioneered thermal tool technology and invented the Award winning CHI Ceramic line. In 2005, Farouk hired former NASA Senior Scientist, Dr. Dennis Morrison, in order to create even more innovative, safer and environmentally friendly products. Shortly after, they invented hair dryers with low electromagnetic fields and formulated a line of hair tools with nano silver mol¬ecules, which kill up to 650 forms of bacteria. Additionally, they invented the first nail lacquer that eliminated harmful ingredients and instead used ingredients such as ceramic, silk and nano silver.
In December 2007, Farouk decided it was time to insource and bring manufacturing back to the U.S.A. from oversea. By July 2009, CHI USA was built and the hiring of more than 1,000 people began. Farouk did not stop there. He decided to partner with factories all over Texas in order to continue cre¬ating jobs. He is a brilliant businessman who figured out the secret to competing with China. Farouk also has three ranches in Texas, where he planted 10,000 olive trees which he uses as ingredients for the CHI Organics line.
Farouk Shami is a humanitarian that fervently believes that what you sow is what you reap. For years, he donated generously to numerous charities and organizations without making it public knowl¬edge. After September 11th, Farouk went to New York to personally help those who were affected by the tragedy, especially his fellow hairdressers. After Hurricane Katrina and Rita, he donated millions to the shelters. In 2008, Galveston and Houston were hit catastrophically by Hurricane Ike. Farouk responded immediately by giving care packages to his employees and partnered with the City of Galveston, sending truckloads of hygiene products they lacked. Farouk and his business partner, John McCall, also opened a diabetes research center at the City of Hope in California in memory of his father, Sheik Mohammed Shami. He also built a school in his honor to help educate young wom¬en in the sciences.
Farouk has received numerous awards, including Immigrant of the Year, a Life Time Achievement Award and Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2009, Farouk received the Apollo Green Award for Farouk Systems, Inc. for bringing jobs back to America
