Recent accounting-related developments have significant valuation implications on intangible assets. This presentation will focus on current developments in the valuation field, recent guidance provided by FASB and developments in the courtroom.

Track 3 Lawsuits and Board Complaints – A review of recent cases.

Track 4 Cyber Security Overview – A discussion of the current cyber security threat landscape and how it has evolved in the last few years, including current issues around intellectual property protection, data classification and how to protect your company’s assets and intellectual property from cyber criminals and espionage.

Track 4 Securing Company Information in the Era of Twitter, FaceBook, Etc. – Aimed to raise awareness of informal (and frequently unintended) data and information disclosure by employees and agents participating in online social networks that may open up a company to legal consequences; review of elements that should be found in IT, Internet, phone, email and password policies in every company; introduction to examples of approaches by existing companies to handle expanding online activities of employees; and, overview of recent litigation on the above issues and the outcomes of same.

Track 5 Outlook for Investments – What's the outlook for stocks and bonds? How important are concerns about deficits, housing, interest rates, and the global economy? What are the strategies to use in today's markets? Kate Warne will address these questions, talk about building investment portfolios, and provide some recommendations.

Track 5 The End of the World As We Know It: IFRS and the FASB/IASB Convergence Projects –While a full-scale conversion to IFRS likely remains several years away, the on-going convergence projects of the FASB and IASB are coming upon us quickly. These projects will result in an unprecedented level of change to U.S. GAAP and impact both public and private companies alike. Specific topics covered will include overview of the SEC Work Plan to evaluate the potential use of IFRS in the U.S., highlights of the key convergence projects, timing, and next steps; discussion of the potential impacts of these efforts to business operations, processes, and systems; and, recommendations for what companies can do now to prepare for these changes.

In this fast-paced interactive session you will assess and learn about your communication style so you can more effectively communicate with others.

Track 4 Mergers and Acquisitions: The Hidden Risks – Research confirms that a very high percentage of U.S. companies engaged in mergers or acquisitions fail to achieve their financial targets within one year following the close of the deal and more than half of them actually lose value. This presentation explores why traditional due diligence may not identify the risk exposure inherent in these deals.

Track 1 Investment Strategies That Aren't "Too Good To Be True" – A discussion of recent investment trends including endowment strategies, ETFs, indexing, and hedge funds, with a focus on asset allocation and diversification to learn how to build a successful investment portfolio.

Track 2 Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Your Company Can't Afford the Risk – The U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other anti-corruption laws are being enforced like never before and not just in the US. Increased enforcement increases the risk for companies operating globally. Learn about the FCPA, recent enforcement trends around the world and the critical importance of a comprehensive anti-corruption compliance program to minimize exposure to the damaging consequences of violating the FCPA or other anti-corruption laws abroad.

Track 3 Estate Planning and IRAs – An overview of common issues to be addressed by the client and their estate planning professional when making a beneficiary designation decision for a Traditional IRA administered under a standard Traditional IRA Agreement. Emphasis will be placed on “stretch out” opportunities to maximize the beneficiaries’ continued tax deferral of the IRA.

Track 5 Texas Ethics for CPAs - This course is a Texas State Board of Public Accountancy approved four-hour ethics class for Texas CPAs. The objectives of the course are to provide a fundamental understanding of the conceptual principles that guide human behavior; teach CPAs to achieve and maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct; teach the core values of the profession; teach compliance with the spirit and intent of the Rules of Professional Conduct; and, address ethical considerations and application of the Rules of Professional Conduct to all aspects of accounting work. COURSE OBJECTIVE: To satisfy TSBPA’s requirement for CPAs to educate themselves in the ethics of the profession. Registration and Fees

Registration fees for this two-day expo are $295 for Houston/other Chapter members and non-CPAs, and $345 for nonmember CPAs. Fee includes admission, continental breakfast, coffee and refreshment breaks, seated luncheons and program materials. Registration will begin at 7:15 AM.

Cancellation and Substitution Policy

Registrants who cancel prior to May 19, 2010 are subject to a $25 cancellation charge. NO REFUNDS will be issued on cancellations received after May 19, 2010. A registration may be transferred to another individual if a registrant is unable to attend. An additional registration fee will be charged to a nonmember CPA transferee. No shows forfeit the entire registration fee.

CPE Credit

CPE credit for the conference is 18 hours (9 hours each day). Partial CPE credit will be given for partial attendance, with no credit given for attendance of less than one hour. TSBPA registered sponsor ID #000094.

Other Information

Satisfactory meeting room temperatures are difficult to maintain. Registrants may wish to bring a sweater or jacket to ensure comfort. Please turn off cellular phones and pagers while in session rooms. Smoking is prohibited in the facility at all times.

Tax Information

The IRS will allow only 50% of all expenses forbusiness meals/entertainment as deductible for tax purposes. The definition of meals includes continental breakfasts, refreshment breaks, lunches and receptions at professional seminars and conferences, including taxes and gratuities. Cost per day: $44.00.

Reliant Center at Reliant Park

Reliant Park is located within the Inner Loop of the southern portion of Interstate Loop 610 between Kirby Street and Fannin Street. Attendees will use the McNee entrance off Kirby (entrance #10). Parking is presently $8.00/day (subject to change) at Reliant Park with no in-and-out privileges. However, for $20 (subject to change) attendees may purchase a two-day parking pass with in and out privileges from Reliant Center (832.667.1719). Parking for the event will be in the North Fannin (orange) parking lot.

Alternative transportation for the same price or less: Metro bus from a Park & Ride lot to downtown or the South Fannin Park & Ride lot. From there, connect to light rail which has a station on Fannin at Reliant Center.
