HOUSTON , Texas – The City of Houston ’s Municipal Court will celebrate Municipal Courts Week, a statewide awareness initiative, November 1 – 5, 2010 with several events scheduled throughout the week that are open to the public.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Houston Public Library Department has partnered with the Municipal Courts to host Muni Court Clinics at four (4) regional libraries throughout the Houston area. These Muni Court Clinics will help people obtain information about their court case(s), warrants, and other helpful court and public safety information.
Municipal Court Department Director and Presiding Judge, Barbara Hartle, wants the public to understand the purpose of the courts in society.
“Our role in the justice system is crucial because we will often be the only court most citizens will ever encounter. Municipal Courts Week activities enable those we serve to become better acquainted with the various services available to them to help them take care of their court matters.”
The clinics at the libraries will be held from 3pm to 6pm, Monday, November 1, 2010 through Thursday, November 4, 2010.
Activities taking place at the 1400 Lubbock location include Jury Appreciation Day, Monday November 1, 2010, and High School Day, Thursday, November 4, 2010, when a group of students from the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice will get a first-hand look at the inner workings of a court docket in progress, receive a court and jail tour, and speak with court officials.
The City of Houston Municipal Courts , which annually handles over 1.2 million civil and criminal cases such as traffic offenses and city ordinance violations, is among the largest court systems in the United States.
