In 2009, the GDP of Xiamen totaled $25 billion with a per capita GDP of $9,429. Having been designed in separate state planning, Xiamen is one of China’s five Special Economic Zones. It has become one of the most important ports in China for international business and cross-straits trade.
Xiamen Seaport is one of the major natural deep-water ports on the Chinese mainland, strategically located between the Changjiang River Delta and Pearl River Delta. It is up to the highest national standard and serves as one of the container hub terminals in China. There are 169 regular container shipping routes including 79 ocean routes, 36 offshore routes, 18 routes to HK and Taiwan, 12 domestic lateral routes, 24 domestic trade routes, and 110 ports servicing both in and outside China. In 2009 the cargo throughout the port of Xiamen totaled 110.96 million tons, making it the 7th largest in China. Xiamen has 45 international shipping agencies, 1376 international freight forwarding agencies and over 198 customs brokers.
