|August, "Jazz Month Houston" features international, national, regional, and local Jazz musicians and this month's goal is to enhance Houston's reputation as an arts center and attract Jazz aficionados worldwide.|
As we kick-off "Jazz Month", we are going to present an eclectic line-up of entertainment for your listening pleasure. We start this week with a great saxophonist, Mr. Johnny Gonzales.
Johnny Gonzales is a well versed horn player that performs the tenor sax, alto sax, soprano sax and the flute. Johnny's musical beginnings started with his mentor-ship under original "Texas Tenor" Arnett Cobb and the great altoist Jimmy Ford. He has performed and toured with Sammy Davis, Jr., Johnny Mathis and is an elite member of Houston's big Band sound, the Conrad Johnson Reunion Band.
Johnny travel the world as a member of the United States Air Force band but his sound is deeply rooted in Latin music. He is currently performing with "Universal Rhythm", a Latin Jazz Ensemble that features bassist Anibal of "El Swing" who brought you the Latin Jazz Showcase every week, right here at Smitty's!!!
Also joining us this week, on the "Big Horn", out of New Orleans, from the "The Dirty Dozen Brass Band", bassist Nicholas Allen on the Tuba! That's right, the Tuba, many times we think of the Tuba as an instrument for a marching band but a really great sousaphone or Tuba player Howard Johnson proved that a tuba can be a lead instrument as well because Howard blows straight ahead Jazz on his sousaphone. In New Orleans the string bass was not originally amplified so the Jazz bands there used the tuba in place of the string bass so that they could be heard. Nicholas' work can be heard on the CDs by "The Dirty Dozen Brass Band" entitled "A Tribute to Jelly Roll Morton" and "Buck Jump".
Now if the Latin flavor and the Dixie Land sound isn't enough we will also be presenting some of the Kids from Bubba Thomas' Summer Jazz Workshop. The workshop is responsible for bringing to Houston the "International Jazz Festival" that will feature, this year, Will Downing, Four Play and Mindi Abair. Bassist "Big" Al Campbell, one of the instructors for the workshop who shares in producing the Jazz Festival will also be on hand this Monday to perform with us as well as give away some discount tickets to Houston's International Jazz Festival!!!
Believe me, the month is just getting started and we will bring you fabulous Mondays in August, "Jazz Month". You can look forward to a "Jump to Jazz" featuring vocalist Veronica Shepherd, legendary drummer Marion Booker, The Phenomenal Women of Jazz Series presented by vocalist Anne LeSear and much, much more, all coming up this month!!!
