CITY OF HOUSTON AND COMPUCYCLE ADD PERMANENT RECYCLING DROP-OFF SITE AND ONE DAY EVENTS FOR ELECTRONICS

BY Alex Wang [ September 26, 2011 at 16:02:10 ]

(September 26, 2011- Houston, TX) Houston Mayor Annise D. Parker, District A City Council Member Brenda Stardig, the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) and CompuCycle announced the addition of a permanent electronics recycling drop-off site for Houstonians to recycle their electronics responsibly at the CompuCycle building located at 7700 Kempwood. The partnership between the City and CompuCycle also provides monthly one -day collection events on Saturdays at three City of Houston recycling centers beginning October 8th.

“A huge amount of electronics are being disposed of improperly,” said Mayor Parker. “Here’s a convenient solution. I urge Houstonians to help our environment by taking advantage of it.”

Recycling electronics keeps potentially harmful materials, such as mercury, cadmium, lead, and cathode ray tubes out of the waste stream and the environment.

“We are constantly looking at ways to expand recycling opportunities for the residents of Houston. We are pleased to partner with CompuCycle in this program,” added SWMD Director Harry Hayes. “The goals established by Mayor Parker as she chaired the Solid Waste Task Force continue to be met in a smart and business practical manner. CompuCycle is to be lauded for its responsible community leadership partnering with the City to manage used computer and electronic commodities.”

“Houston residents should rest assured that their computers will be properly handled for recycling or refurbishing,” said Clive Hess, CompuCycle President. “CompuCycle is the first R2 certified, locally owned company in Houston. In addition to rigorous audits, the R2 certification requires that all hard drives are either destroyed through the industrial strength hard drive shredder or undergoes a standard three-pass wipe through United States Department of Defense compliant data erasure software that removes all partitions, tables and drive formats,” added Hess.

Items accepted:

PCs, servers, keyboards, mice, laptops, game consoles, monitors, small kitchen appliances, memory chips, hubs and routers, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, projectors, rechargeable batteries, cable boxes, car batteries, telephones, cell phones, PDAs, tape drives, hard drives, cords, cables and cameras.

“I am glad to see that there is a new, permanent location for Houstonians to recycle their electronic devices, located conveniently in District A. Recycling electronics keeps large amounts of waste out of landfills and I am thankful for The Solid Waste Department and CompuCycle’s efforts to make Houston a ‘greener’ city,” said District A City Council Member Brenda Stardig.

Permanent drop-off site:

The permanent location is 7700 Kempwood, Houston TX 77055 in the Spring Branch area. It is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm. In addition to electronics recycling, this is now a drop-off for common household recyclables such as paper, plastics, aluminum and glass.

Once a month drop-off sites:

Beginning October 8, 2011, the monthly Saturday electronics recycling events will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the:

Kingwood Metro Transit Center (1st Saturday of the month) 3210 W. Lake Houston Parkway
Ellington/Clear Lake Neighborhood Recycling Center (2nd Saturday of the month), Highway 3 @ Brantley Road
Center Street Recycling Center (3rd Saturday of the month) 3602 Center Street.

“We appreciate the City of Houston adding this great amenity to our district,” said Council Member Mike Sullivan. “This is a great service to the residents of District E who have always expressed an interest in recycling.”

For more information, visit www.houstonsolidwaste.org or call 3-1-1, the City’s Customer Service Hotline.

The Solid Waste Management Department provides solid waste service to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective.
