“AmeriCorps Works” is the theme of Houston AmeriCorps Awareness Week 2012, scheduled for May 12 to 19. The week offers the community an opportune time to acknowledge the work of AmeriCorps members and alumni and become involved in public service. The week will feature a variety of public service events designed to introduce residents to volunteer opportunities. The events are organized by numerous nonprofit groups and other entities, including: College Forward Houston, the City of Houston Mayor’s Volunteer Initiatives Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters – Greater Houston, Life Support Development Ministry, Houston Food Bank, The Alliance for Multicultural Community Services and Partnership for Advancement & Immersion of Refugees. Houston AmeriCorps Awareness Week was initiated by College Forward Houston to unite numerous AmeriCorps organizations and celebrate community service. AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that gives thousands of Americans the opportunity to participate in community service projects in locations across the country.
