Piano Students from China Accepted to 3rd Texas State International Piano Festival

BY Alex Wang [ May 24, 2012 at 08:12:06 ]

Four piano students from Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai have been selected from a pool of 100 students worldwide to attend the 3rd Texas State International Piano Festival, held June 2-10th, 2012 at Texas State University-San Marcos.
Young artists are chosen from around the world for their artistry and their dedication to their field. One young artist from China won silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, Junior Division.

Dr. Washington Garcia, Festival Founder and Director, identified these talented students when he toured China last December. Dr. Garcia has been touring China for the past 5 years, performing solo recitals and teaching classes in some of the most important conservatories in China, including the Central Conservatory in Beijing. He loves China.

Dr. Washington Garcia believes that the piano allows him to speak to many different people from different cultures without words. He founded the Texas State International Piano Festival, so as to create opportunities for young piano students aged 11 years to college level, from around the world to connect and communicate with each other. The Festival creates opportunities for academic, cultural and social exchange. Students are united by their love of music and their pursuit of excellence. The friendships they form become the foundation for future cross-cultural dialogue and collaborative ventures.

The young artists benefit from instruction from some of the most sought-after performers and teachers in the world, representing the Juilliard School, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Eastman School of Music and Texas State University-San Marcos, among others.

Dr. Garcia is the recipient of many awards throughout his career. A native of Ecuador, he was chosen from a large field of contestants from 33 countries by the Kennedy Center to receive one of two $25,000 grants awarded to pianists in its Fellowships of the Americas Program. As a result he came to the United States to begin intensive studies with Professor Julian Martin at the Peabody Institute. He went on to claim many awards granted by the Peabody Institute, the Ecuadorian Government and Texas State University-San Marcos. He was also named a Pressler Scholar. Grateful for the scholarship support, Dr. Garcia now has dedicated his life to creating opportunities for young artists to succeed and the Texas State International Piano Festival awards scholarships to students so that no one is denied an opportunity to attend this world-class program.

Dr. Garcia is also an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, having performed in prestigious venues in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Austria, Rome, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Japan and the United States. Dr. Garcia will debut with the Austin Symphony this upcoming season, October 19th and 20th 2012, performing the Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. He will return to China next December for an 8-concert tour, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and he will audition young artists for the next year's Festival.
