Houston Public Library’s Poetry Reading Series Celebrates a Year Join Mayor Annise Parker in Anniversary Public Poetry Event[4/7/2012]

Everyone is invited to join Mayor Annise Parker and talented local and visiting poets in celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Houston Public Library’s Public Poetry Series. The program will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 2 PM at the historic Julia Ideson Building. Afterwards, the audience can meet the poets and have copies of their books signed. The lineup includes some of Houston’s best poets, including featured guest Stephen Fox, who will talk about the newly-renovated Julia Ideson Building, and a talented student with Writers in the Schools (WITS).

The Julia Ideson Building is located at 500 McKinney, 77002, 832-393-1313. This poetry reading series is presented by the Houston Public Library in partnership with Public Poetry. The event is free and open to the public. For more details visit www.houstonlibrary.org or call 832-393-1313.

Featured Guest –Stephen Fox is an architectural historian. He is a lecturer at the Rice University School of Architecture and the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture of the University of Houston and a Fellow of the Anchorage Foundation of Texas. Fox’s work is focused on architecture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially the architecture of Houston and Texas. Fox is the author of “The Country Houses of John F. Staub” (2007), “Rice University: An Architectural Tour” in Princeton Architectural Press’s Campus Guide series (2001), and the “Houston Architectural Guide” (1999).

Poets

Mike Alexander ran the weekly poetry open mic at Helios for six years out of its 10-year run. He has been on the editorial boards of Lyric and Panhandler. In 2008, he coordinated a chapbook contest for Panhandler. His 2010 chapbook, “We Internet in Different Voices (Modern Metrics),” is available through EXOT books. Previous chapbooks include “Ampersand” (1990), “References” (1996), “January Y2K Blues” (1999), and “Blinded by Absinthe” (2004).

Janet Lowery’s poetry has appeared in “Poetry East,” “Greensboro Review,” “Concho River Review,” and in anthologies such as “Improbable Worlds,” “Texas in Poetry 2,” and “Who Are the Rich and Where Do They Live?” Her poetry collection based on women from Greek mythology, Traffic in Women, was published in 2008; her trilogy of plays by the same name was produced 2006-2008 on the University of St. Thomas campus where she teaches literature and creative writing.

Jeremyah Payne/The Fluent One is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. In the fall of 2007, while studying Computer Science, he began writing and performing poetry as a member of the collegiate slam team. The team went on to rank eighth nationally. Since then he has been a mentor to youth with Meta-Four Houston, and a member of the Houston VIP Slam Team.

Claire Kageyama-Ramakrishnan earned an M.F.A. from the University of Virginia, where she was a Henry Hoyns Fellow, and earned a Ph.D. in literature and creative writing from the University of Houston, where she was a Cambor Fellow. A full-time professor of English at Houston Community College Central, she is the author of Shadow Mountain and most recently, Bear, Diamonds and Crane.
