The City of Houston Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) invites the public to the Brilliant Lecture Series presentation of "A Conversation with Stephen Hawking" on film, scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 2013, 7:00 p.m., at Jones Hall. Professor Hawking's failing health prevents his travel to Houston as originally scheduled. Filmed in Cambridge, England, Hawking's presentation will focus on his personal journey, extraordinary career and living with a physical disability. Elaine Roberts, Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities division manager, will present a proclamation by Mayor Annise Parker celebrating "Stephen Hawking Day."

Professor Hawking is a world renowned British physicist, cosmologist and Medal of Freedom winner. Regarded as the most brilliant physicist since Albert Einstein, Hawking is Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge. From 1979 to 2009, he held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, the chair held by Sir Isaac Newton in 1663. His publications include A Brief History of Time, an international bestseller, A Briefer History of Time, the essay collection Black Holes and Baby Universe and The Universe in a Nutshell. In 1963, Hawking contracted a motor neuron disease and was given two years to live. Yet he went on to Cambridge to become a brilliant researcher and Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. Hawking has over a dozen honorary degrees and was named Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1982. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Science.

MOPD is is pleased to join community partners as a co-sponsor of the Brilliant Lecture Series. The office is conducting promotional outreach to persons with disabilities and the general public to encourage attendance. MOPD is also providing support for the distribution of Hawking’s filmed lecture to 75,000 school children and area libraries.

The Brilliant Lecture Series is a nonprofit organization that works to provide transformational experiences and a forum for generating new ideas through lectures, direct in-school programs and cross-cultural opportunities. Its mission is to educate, inspire and increase public awareness within communities by providing a forum for interaction with national and international leaders, role models, philanthropists, artists, humanitarians and other prominent members of society. For more information about Brilliant Lecture Series, call 713-974-1335 or visit www.brilliantlectures.org.
