Picasso in Paris: A Gallery Concert at MFAH
HOUSTON – Houston Friends of Chamber Music presents a gallery concert at MFAH in conjunction with the exhibition “Picasso Black and White”. After their dazzling Viva La Musica Espanola concert at MFAH last January, the Kostov-Valkov Duo, piano and cello, will perform “Picasso in Paris”, a program of works by composers who collaborated with Picasso in Paris: Igor Stravinsky, Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Nadia Boulanger. The concert will take place on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in Gallery 214 at the Audrey Jones Beck Building of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, located on 5601 Main Street.
The program will feature Igor Stravinsky’s "Suite Italienne for Cello and Piano". In 1920, Picasso and Stravinsky collaborated on the ballet "Pulcinella”, for which Picasso designed all the costumes and the stage sets. “Suite Italienne” is an extract of several pieces taken from the "Pulcinella" score. The Duo will also perform Darius Milhaud’s "Elegie", Francis Poulenc’s "Sonata for Cello and Piano op.143", Erik Satie’s "Four Pieces for Violin and Piano" (trans. for cello and piano). Today Picasso’s black-and-white portraits of Milhaud, Poulenc, Satie, and Stravinsky are probably the most well-known images of these composers. The program also includes the famous Parisian female composer Nadia Boulanger‘s"Three Pieces for Cello and Piano".
Brilliant Shepherd School of Music Doctoral students Lachezar Kostov, cellist, and Viktor Valkov, pianist, have appeared together for more than ten years at concert venues in the USA, Germany, Italy and Bulgaria. Following their critically acclaimed debut at Carnegie Hall in 2009, the Duo has received high accolades for their inspired and unique performances. In October 2011 the Kostov-Valkov Duo won First Prize, the overall Liszt Prize, and all special prizes at the Liszt-Garrison International Competition. In 2012, Viktor Valkov was awarded the Gold Medal at the New Orleans International Piano Competition. The Duo’s first commercial CD, Nikolai Roslavets’ works for cello and piano, was released by NAXOS in 2011.
A reception with the performers will follow the concert.
