Dear Pastor and Dear Community Leader,
There are many issues impacting our children and communities that you as a Pastor or community leader engage in on a daily basis. But there are other challenging issues affecting the very future of our children that many times does not receive the necessary attention because we lack the necessary information to play a prominent role. One of those issues is Dyslexia which crosses racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines. Dyslexia is characterized by difficulty with learning to read fluently and with accurate comprehension despite normal intelligence. It affects 1 out of 5 people and most are never diagnosed including African Americans who represent a significant percentage of this number. Our kids suffer as a result and many times are negatively labeled as academically impaired by their teachers.
On this Friday, November 1, 2013, I will be hosting along with the Yale University Center for Dyslexia and Creativity a very important event on the Dyslexia Initiative. You will be provided with astonishing information about Dyslexia and how it is impacting our children now and how it will affect their future if it is not diagnosed.
The event will be held at Texas Southern University in the Barbara Jordan – Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, Room 114 from 1:00PM – 3:00PM on this Friday, November 1. Your attendance is important to help us spread the word about this initiative and to begin developing local and national policies that will help save some of the most gifted children in our community. Please RSVP to Pernell Davis in my office at (713) 655-0050.
Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to seeing you there.
Very truly yours,
Sheila Jackson Lee
Member of Congress
