Henan province is considered the cradle of Chinese civilization due to its location on the Yellow River. This rich historic heritage has endowed it with numerous historic treasures, from primitive dwellings to earliest wheel thrown pottery. The remains of some of the earliest human settlements have been unearthed here. The Shaolin Temple, a Buddhist temple on Mount Song, near Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, is also located in Henan province. It is famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu and it is the best known Mahayana Buddhist monastery in the Western world. Shaolin Monastery and its famed Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
