EDUCATION, HEALTH INSURANCE ENROLLMENT AND FREE IMMUNIZATIONS FOR CHILDREN

WHAT: Houston Diabetes Alert Day Event
WHEN: Tuesday, March 25, 2014; 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Allen Parkway Village, 1600 Allen Parkway Houston, TX 77019
WHY: Every 17 seconds someone in this country is diagnosed with diabetes. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of this epidemic and combat this life-changing disease that is so prominent in the Houston area. With the Affordable Care Act, persons with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes are now able to receive health care coverage. The deadline for health care enrollment is March 31, 2014. At this event, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) representatives will educate and/or enroll individuals for health insurance.
DETAILS: American Diabetes Association Alert Day, which is held every fourth Tuesday in March, is a one-day, “wake-up call” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This is a free event open to the public with numerous health sessions and screenings, including:
· Educational materials to manage diabetes and prevent early onset of type 2 diabetes
· Information and programming for diabetes support
· American Diabetes Association with University of Houston Pharmaceutical Department will provide Free Glucose Screening
· H-E-B coupon for Glucose Starter Kits
· BCBSTX health insurance enrollment assistance from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
· Care Van free immunizations for children from 2 months thru 18 years old from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m
o Eligibility for free vaccines:
§ Child has no private insurance
§ CHIP not accepted
§ Child CAN have Medicaid
§ Parent or guardian must accompany child
§ Up-to-date shot record
