George Bush Intercontinental Airport first opened its doors in 1969.
To celebrate its 45th anniversary, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is holding a free, fun-filled day to celebrate this important milestone.
The public is welcome to attend and admission to the event is absolutely free. The festivities will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the United Airlines hangar, located just north of Will Clayton Parkway.
Guests will enjoy a variety of displays and activities, including a raffle where the grand prize is a set of airline tickets aboard KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
Free parking, along with a complimentary shuttle service, is available on 5050 Wright Road (Colonel Fisher Blvd.) in Houston.
Bush Intercontinental Airport became part of the Houston Airport System in June 1969 and now stands as a premiere global gateway with nonstop flights to 122 destinations in the U.S. and nearly 70 international destinations.
With 40 million passengers per year, IAH plays a key role in maintaining the region's positive economic momentum, as well as the high quality of life enjoyed by its residents.
Collectively, the airports within HAS generate an economic impact of $27.5 billion to the Houston region and IAH plays a key role in creating that sizeable impact.
The birthday gathering on June 7 is designed to recognize and celebrate this important role played by IAH in the overall success of the Houston region.
Events will include aircraft and other static displays, games, face painting, moonwalks, video game bus and music. There will also be a barbecue cook-off with proceeds from ticket sales going to the Airport Interfaith Chapel.
“This event allows us to thank the local community for their contributions to the success of George Bush Intercontinental Airport,” said Houston Airport System's Director of Airport Initiatives and Volunteer Services Caroline Schneider. “There will be fun activities for all ages, and we are holding raffle drawings throughout the day for exciting prizes including airline tickets and electronics.”
Barbecue cook-off tickets are only $3 and raffle tickets range from $1 to $5, only cash will be accepted.
