Dear teachers and students,
Distinguished guests,
Dear friends,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Good evening. It is my great pleasure to attend A Night of China, a joint celebration of the coming Chinese Spring Festival by Chinese and American high school students. On behalf of the Consulate General of People’s Republic of China in Houston, I’d like to express our warm greetings to all of you being with us this evening, and also a special welcome to the young artists from China.　

Chinese Lunar New Year is the oldest and most important festival in Chinese calendar. To celebrate Chinese New Year becomes more and more popular in American cities like Houston, as Chinese population grows there.

To improve relations and introduce Chinese Spring Festival culture to American friends, China Ministry of Culture sends these young artists to the United States. Our Consulate, Bellaire High School, US-China’s Friendship Association are happy to sponsor this evening show. I believe it is an opportunity to see the richness of Chinese culture and to celebrate the diversity of culture in Houston today.

Let me have some words to introduce these beautiful Chinese teenage performers. They are from Renmin University of China High School. As one of the top high schools in China, it has received international recognition for its quality and innovation. These young students are not professional dancers, but they perform professionally. Despite of their average age at 15, they have visited and performed in nearly 20 cities in Russia, France, Austria, US. Wherever they go, they are warmly welcomed. This year, they come again. They just visited New York, Boston, Chicago and Minnesota, they will also go to Dallas and Los Angeles.

Children are the hope of a country, the future of a nation. This evening we will see programs by these Chinese dancers, but also by Bellaire High School arts students. I believe their performance lay down a tomorrow bridge of friendship, between the two schools, and across Pacific Ocean as well. This evening is not only a show, but also a precious opportunity to strengthen mutual understanding, to find the differences and similarities between our two cultures, and to embrace the connections of the two cultures in all their diversity.

Finally, I`d like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to Bellaire High School. Your kind assistance makes this evening possible.
