Grab your passport and pack a cooler for Dance of Asian America’s Splendid China: Journey to the East, premiering on October 19-20, 2007, at The Miller Outdoor Theater. Chinese history will come to life in this unique and high caliber performance featuring amazing international and national guest artists and outstanding local artists. Dances by Dance of Asian America and guest artist from Shanghai and New York will be your travel guide as you explore the rich heritage of China with all new and award winning choreography. Clothed in elaborate costumes and dancing to a mix of contemporary and traditional Chinese music, this unique performance is both entertaining and enriching.
Joining the Dance of Asian America company are seven international and national guest artists. Each of the dance pieces is unique in their story, but all of them have a cultural and historical significance. Harvest Dance, will be portrayed throughout China’s countryside. Farmers mark the harvest with dances using simple silk fans, handkerchiefs and tambourines. Wu Wu, is Classical Chinese dance is derived from martial arts and tai chi. This dance portrays each form of art and how they brilliantly unite to form the art of Classical Chinese dance. On the lighter side, The Wedding Chamber is a comedic yet tender depiction of a young country boy meeting his bride for the first time on their wedding night. Hu Tung Er, a nationally recognized piece in 2006’s China’s National Dance Competition, is a foreign dance from beyond the western borders of China. Warm, hospitable, and incorporating many intricate techniques, this dance was accepted into the Tang Dynasty as a much loved Palace dance for the emperor of that era. Hope, the gold medal winner in 2003 China’s National Dance Competition, is an interpretation of a lone tree striving and surviving in the mountainous and desert-like region of San Xi. This dance portrays hard times and continuing perseverance through even the smallest shred of hope.
Come see the sights in an exciting Journey to the East at Miller Outdoor Theatre… marvel at the enchanting ladies of the Dai’s Province, swim with exotic fish in the South China Sea, and feel the syncopated rhythms of Korea – all while learning about the rich history of China. This evening in the park will be fun for the whole family.
How to get to Miller Outdoor Theatre
Miller Outdoor Theatre is located at 100 Concert Drive in Hermann Park, just south of the Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Garden Center.
Directions from 59 or 45:
Take 59 or 45 to Highway 288 South - Exit North MacGregor and turn right onto North MacGregor. The road will fork once, stay to the right. Take a right at the light onto Golf Course Drive. Parking is available on both sides of Golf Course Drive.
Directions from 610 South:
Take 610 South to Highway 288 North. Exit North MacGregor and turn left into North MacGregor. The road will fork once, stay to the right. Take a right at the light onto Golf Course Drive. Parking is available on both sides of Golf Course Drive.
Access to Golf Course Drive:
Often, when the Park is near capacity, HPD will close access to Golf Course Drive at N. MacGregor. In this case, go straight through the intersection of N. MacGregor and Golf Course Drive. Turn right onto Fannin. At the second light on Fannin, take a right onto Hermann Circle Drive. Continue on Hermann Circle Drive as it turns into Golf Course Drive. Parking is available on both sides of Golf Course Drive.
