OCEF WINS $67,000 AWARD IN 2009 AMERICA'S GIVING CHALLENGE
Houston, November 25, 2009--- The Overseas China Education Foundation (OCEF) has won a $67,000 award from the 2009 America's Giving Challenge. Entering the competition late, OCEF still finished in the first place among 7875 participating charity organizations. According to the official announcement made by the event organizers on November 24, 2009, OCEF has successfully raised $156,637 from 13,772 donations in the 30-day, national online fund-raising competition organized by the Case Foundation, Causes and PARADE Publications.
"I am deeply touched by the care and generosity of thousands of OCEF donors, and by the compassion and tremendous hard work of OCEF volunteers. This Prize is truly shared by all who support the core principle of OCEF: every child, no matter how impoverished and underprivileged, should have access to basic education. We are also grateful to the organizers of this event for providing OCEF an excellent platform to reach out to new supporters and reignite the passion of existing donors," said Professor Gan Liang, president of OCEF.
OCEF is an independent, US -based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the education of disadvantaged children in impoverished areas of China. OCEF is run entirely by volunteers, primarily in North America and China, who carry out all functions including fund-raising, student application reviews, field inspections, fund distribution, and book donations.
OCEF was originally founded in 1992 in California with the name of SOS China Education Fund. Since its inception, OCEF has funded more than 26,000 Grade 1-9 students and more than 2,000 high school students. In addition, OCEF has developed special programs to build school buildings, set up libraries, and provide financial aid to teachers in the most underdeveloped areas of China.
About America's Giving Challenge
The 2009 America's Giving Challenge, which took place from October 7 - November 6, generated more than 105,000 donations that helped to raise $2.1 million for nonprofit organizations. Causes initially competed to win cash awards totaling $170,000, funded by the Case Foundation, based on the number of donations to their cause, not dollars raised. On October 30, the presenting partners announced an additional $75,000 grant for awards from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Causes hosted the Challenge through its application on Facebook and PARADE Publications helped to launch the Challenge with a cover story about the importance of giving by actor Matt Damon.
