In my over 30 years of endeavors in arts, I have gone through different phases of careers, played different roles in life, surfed on ecstasies and sank into despairs, traveled over several continents and immersed in different cultures. I have tried to capture and synthesize these experiences into several different series of paintings.
While my paintings are abstract representational in style, most of the time, I tried to tell a story in the confines of a canvas. I do not like to seek exterior writings to explain my paintings. I think the audience should and could add his or her own interpretation to what they discerned from the canvases. For example, my "Crossroad" series depicts the crossroad the artists faced in several artist villages in Beijing after the recession of 2008. They had to decide whether to continue the pursuit of arts or take other career to survive. My "It's a Beautiful Word" series captures the culture, customs, sceneries and the hopes and trials of different countries that I travelled to. The local maps I brought back and imbedded in the paintings helped to tell the stories. My "The Epic of the Second Sex " is the echos of Simone de Beauvoir's theory that women have been relegated to a second sex status as opposed to men's primal status. My recent series of "Color Scape" is abstract landscape on simplified color fields. It reflects my longings for simplicity and pure joy after an unusually hectic year.
I often work on several paintings simultaneously, each belonging to a different series. Sometimes I leave a series alone for a period of time and come back to it at a later date, sometimes with some variations.
As to medium, I favor the oil the best. It allows me to start working without pre set plans and allow the painting to grow with me. I have added multimedia to oil to enrich the contents as well as the texture.
My recent exhibits include several solo exhibits in Taipei from 2005 to 2011, LA Artwalks in 2011, Florence Biennale in 2011, a Show in Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Arts, in 2012, NY Expo 2012, a Solo Show in Artifact Gallery in New York in 2012 and a show in Salon des Artistes Independants in Paris in 2012. My works have been represented by World Wide Art Books and some of my artworks have been published in Editions V and VII of its International Contemporary Masters. I have also exhibited in Shanghai and Hong Kong. A piece of my works is collected by Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Arts. I have published two books of my artworks.
I lived in Boston for more than 30 years before I moved and settled in Southern California in 2006. While in Boston, I was very active in art related activities: attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston, served as a trustee of the Peabody Museum of Salem (Now Peabody and Essex Museum) from 1985 to 1994, co-founded the New England Chinese American Fine Arts Society and was its vice president and sat on its board from 1994 to 2005.
Now settled in Southern California, in addition to creating arts, I am working to be more involved with the art scene here.
